Know Your Car Brakes

To understand automotive brake repair properly, you need to understand the complex mechanism of the car's brake system. The following part by part explanation would help you in knowing the car brake system better:

  • First of all let us understand how the pedal works. The pedal is steel lever that sends the force applied by your foot to the master cylinder. Usually the pedal has an electronic switch attached to it that turns the brake lights on when you press the pedal. When the pedal is pressed, the master cylinder is pushed. This master cylinder contains a piston and a fluid reservoir. When you press the pedal, piston is moved which in turn pushes fluid into the cylinder.
  • Generally all cars have disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear. When the piston is pressed and fluid is pushed it applies pressure on the brake pads.
  • Another important part of the car brake system that needs attention is the rotors. The rotors are made of cast iron. They are strong enough to disperse heat. If rotors are not strong enough, they can bend within a few thousand miles making the brake system faulty.
  • The brake pads are generally made from a metallic or a hard organic material. These pads are able to survive under high heat and immense pressure. When the brake pads touch the rotors, friction from the contact creates heat. Thus when due to friction the rotating energy of car wheels turns into heat, the car stops.

Automotive brake repair becomes necessary when the car brake system become faulty due to wear and tear. It is always better to take precautionary measures such as to check the brake pads every six months. You should avoid riding the brakes. It is always better to slow down with reasonable pressure.
